About the Event
Formed in 2019, Sound Bridges is a New York-based performance group with a mission to explore world music and dance to create new works fusing several genres: West African, jazz, flamenco, and tap. Staying true to their roots, this multicultural collective of musicians and dancers constructs new rhythmic conversations, fusing elements from various dance forms and cultures, emphasizing musicality, vulnerability, and authenticity. They present all original compositions drawn from African and jazz influences featuring the ancient sounds of the balafon, a wooden xylophone central to the Mande music traditions of West Africa. Percussive dance, polyrhythms, West African dance movements, improvisation, and the passionate grace of flamenco dance are the components that characterize their choreography. This program is made possible with funds from NYC Councilmember, Shekar Krishnan.
